Local Birdingpal Contacts
Local Birdwatchers
Using the Birdingpal resources you must agree to the following: If you contact a local Birdingpal and make arrangement to go birding, you should note it is common courtesy to make sure you show up for the appointment. If for any reason you are unable to do this, the least you must do is contacting the local Pal right away.
Please note that most Birdingpals are serious birdwatchers. It is a privilege to contact them, and your message should reflect it. A local Pal does not get paid, but should he/she offer to take you out birding, using their own vehicle, it would be courteous to pay for the fuel. A lunch and/or a small gift would also be appropriate, something as simple as a souvenir of your country, or a pin from your local birding club.

Salt Lake is central to several wildife refuges, in particular Fish Lakes, Ruby, and Bear River bird refuges. One to two hours of travel from the city is required to visit these sites. The city is bounded by national forest and alpine wilderness. The Golden Circle of national parks is about five hours south of the city. We could meet in that area. Desert wetlands refuges are high concentration areas for migrating waterfowl in spring and fall. The mountain forests and desert parks have unique populations. My wife and I are not serious birders, but we are interested in searching for new birds for our life lists. Birding here can include some strenuous hiking, great scenery and cultural history. I also spend a few months a year in Missouri. We might be able to meet there. I know the parks, refuges, and forests there quite well. Eastern and western bird populations are quite different in USA. I am a retired park manager and biologist.

I have a birding lease on Deseret Ranch the largest ranch in Utah (over 250,000 acres). Typically 100-135 bird species will be seen in a day on Deseret Ranch. Deseret Ranch is an Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA). Great Salt Lake, Bear River National Wildlife Refuge and Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area are all located in the same area. This is the largest body of water west of the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. Great Salt Lake is a part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve network.
The American Birding Association awarded me the Ludlow Griscom Award in 2008 and the Roger Tory Peterson Natural History Institute Awarded me the Educational Achievement Award in 2008.
My fee is $200 per day which includes transportation, guide, food, lodging and tresspass fees (where necessary).
