THE ST JOHN'S EXPERIENCE
For centuries fishermen from Europe visited the Grand banks off Newfoundland to catch the then abundant Cod Fish. They used the harbour that is now the Port of St John’s as a landing area to salt and cure their catches throughout the early 1500s, and was officially established as a community when Sir Humphrey Gilbert declared Newfoundland an English Colony in 1583. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1947.
With a long and prosperous history in the fishery industry, the last half of the 20th century has seen St. John's, the
provincial capital, transformed into a modern export and service centre. More recently, its proximity to recently discovered oil fields has led to an economic boom that has spurred population growth.
Our trip will provide you with a good sampling of birding around St John’s. The lists of birds and information that we provide are examples only and generally reflect conditions that exist in the summer months, i.e. May to September. However winter in St John’s can be great for visiting gulls and European stragglers.
