Birdwatching in Quebec

Quebec is the only “European” part of North America (especially Quebec City) and well worth a visit should you decide to bird Canada.
Canada’s largest province (only the territory of Nunavut is larger) has recorded more than 420 species of birds, and is located on the main eastern migration route offering some spectacular birdwatching during spring and fall.
Sparsely populated and with more than 90% of its territory within the Canadian Shield it is rich in forest, rivers and wetlands. Tundra to the north, mixed forest of the Appalachian Mountains extending from New England into the Eastern Townships and the Gaspe Peninsula offer unique birdwatching in many habitats.
The Gulf of St. Lawrance including the Anticosti and other small islands is not only for birdwatching, since you will have to share it with the whales such as the Beluga.
Good roads and infrastructure makes it easy to travel here and you will find Birdingpals willing to help you in many places throughout the province.

Local Birdingpal Contacts
Local Birdwatchers
Using the Birdingpal resources you must agree to the following: If you contact a local Birdingpal and make arrangement to go birding, you should note it is common courtesy to make sure you show up for the appointment. If for any reason you are unable to do this, the least you must do is contacting the local Pal right away.
Please note that most Birdingpals are serious birdwatchers. It is a privilege to contact them, and your message should reflect it. A local Pal does not get paid, but should he/she offer to take you out birding, using their own vehicle, it would be courteous to pay for the fuel. A lunch and/or a small gift would also be appropriate, something as simple as a souvenir of your country, or a pin from your local birding club.

I have lived on the Magdalen Islands all my life and have been birding since 1991. We find on average 200 species a year. The total species recorded so far for the islands is over 320 species. The endangered breeding species are: Piping Pplover (only nesting grounds remaining in Quebec ) the Roseate Tern and the Horned Grebe, Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow. Also nesting on the island is a small colony of Black-headed Gulls. Bird Rock and Brion Islands located 32 and 16 kilometres from the main islands offer spectacular views of the many Northern Gannets, Common and Thick-billed Murres also Black-legged Kittiwakes and Atlantic Puffins. The thick-billed Murre colony is the most southernly in North America. Also a good numbers of shorebirds (26 species) are seen during each fall migration (August-September).

The island of Montreal is surrounded by areas where birds congregate especially during the migratory season. There is also an urban forest on Mount Royal in the middle of the city where many birds can be spotted. I am an archaeologist and a Scout leader so I have long enjoyed nature and the outdoors. I am a recent member of the Bird Protection Quebec and am learning a lot about our local avians by participating in many of their outings.

Sainte-Julie is close to Montréal, on south shore. I can conduct birders in most of Southern Québec province to places where specially interesting species are living. I’m retired and always glad to help visitors to see target birds if they can be tolerant with my poor spoken English.

The Quebec City area marks the northeastern limit for a number of eastern hardwood species. It is also a stone's throw away from the eastern boreal forest, saltwater species dwelling the St. Lawrence estuary, and next to the province's best birding spot: Cap Tourmente. Send me your "wish lists" and I will do my best to find as many as possible.
