Local Birdwatchers
Please note that most Birdingpals are serious birdwatchers. It is a privilege to contact them, and your message should reflect it. A local Pal does not get paid, but should he/she offer to take you out birding, using their own vehicle, it would be courteous to pay for the fuel. A lunch and/or a small gift would also be appropriate, something as simple as a souvenir of your country, or a pin from your local birding club.

I am born in 1965 and have been birding since teenages. I like to travel and to meet people from around the world, specially if they have similar intrests as me, meaning intrests about nature, photography and specially birds. I live in Leksand, a small town in Dalecarlia (Dalarna) province in the middle part of Sweden. It is situated about 280 km to NW from Stockholm and about 200 km to SE from the Scandinavian mountains that raise above the tree level. In the area of Leksand itself there is a domination of taiga forests, but also some intresting wetlands. Examples of birds that might be intresting for a visitor: Ural Owl (Strix uralensis), some years Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa), Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), Arctic Loon (Gavia arctica), Red-throated Loon (Gavia stellata), Parrot Crossbill (Loxia pyttiopsittacus) etc. We will always show maximum respect for the birds and never disturb them at the nesting places, unless this is considered harmless. See you behind the binoculars!

Birdwatching is my hobby, not a ticker. Skåne is an excellent place to watch Scandinavian birds - see www.skof.se for details. I work in Denmark and birdwatch there too.

P Österblad Sölvesborg, South Sweden Weekend Swedish/English
I`m birding mostly within a radius of about 50km from Sölvesborg. Within this area theres probably the highest biodiversity in Sweden, but note theres none of the northern species. (as an American birder once thought). Next to Sölvesborg (20 min drive) to Kristianstad. Krisitianstad is the community that have most breeding/singing species i Sweden. So this area is quite good... Birding most of my sparetime (exept in midwinter/midsummer (only once or twice weekly - low season), and a keen twitcher. Know/recognice all the birds in the field, from all of europe, both by sight and ear.

Specialities in the county of Uppland include owls (Ural, Pygmy, Tengmalm´s etc) and woodpeckers (Black, Grey-headed, Three-toed etc) and to a certain extent game birds like Capercaille, Black Grouse and Hazel Hen. Best time to visit is in March-April when also geese, swans and cranes are on migration. A visit later in May-June is optimal for breeding birds including more easterly warblers such as Blyth´s Reed, Marsh, Grasshopper and River Warbler. Also Red-breasted Flycatcher, Rosefinch and Red-backed Shrike are around, to name a few. Late summer-autumn is good for arctic waders, September-October best for migrating passerines (often best by the coastline) and again geese. November-February is usually very slow but could some years offer invasion species like three species of Crossbills, Pine Grosbeak, Snow Bunting and Hawk-Owl.
F Litsgård Uppsala, Uppland Weekend Swedish/English
I live on the great plains of Uppland, with a massive migration of waders and geese during autumn and close to the south-most areas, where you can find species as Grey-headed Woodpecker and Ural Owl. Almost every winter we see Pine Grosbeaks, Hawk Owls and White-winged Crossbills.
